Chapter 1:
Isabella Hutchins rode in the front of the ambulance through the semi-crowded streets of Las Vegas. She and her partner, Joshua Peterson, were on their way to an emergency call from one of the nursing homes. Both didn't say anything to each other, anxious to get to the building in time for whatever the emergency may be. They pulled up to the building and before the vehicle was even turned off, Isabella jumped out with her emergency bag. Josh would get the stretcher if needed, it was her job to find the person in need of assisstance.
She was directed to a room in the back. Walking in she found an elderly woman on the floor. She stepped up to her and knelt, setting the bag down next to them, and spoke softly. "Hello, are you alright?"
The elderly woman looked up at her, and smiled. "Well, I was," she said, and laughed. Isabella joined, and the woman continued. "I was getting back into bed when I slipped and fell."
Isabella winced, and she said, "Oh no. Are you hurting anywhere?"
"My hip is really sore. I tried getting up, but my body doesn't want to work nowadays, it seems."
She smiled, liking her immediately. "What is your name?"
"Inez Curry." Inez smiled up at her, and asked for her name.
"I am Isabella Hutchins."
"Such a beautiful name to have," Inez said. "Such a nice girl..." she added softly.
Isabella could hear the stretcher being wheeled in and looked back in the doorway to see Joshua enter with the backboard. The both of them got Inez safely onto the stretcher, Isabella speaking encouragingly to Inez the whole time. She wasn't surprised to find herself starting a conversation with Inez, and figured that she should keep going with it since she would ride with Inez on the way.
They got Inez settled in, and Isabella climbed in after. She started taking Inez's stats, when Inez spoke.
"You have an old soul in you. Someone who has experienced a lot of life, much like I have."
Isabella smiled and said, "Do you believe so?" Inez nodded in reply as the ambulance started.
Well, I suppose she's right about that, Isabella thought. Being nearly 500 years old has that effect on people.

Me too.
